We recently sat down with Simon to discuss the team's remarkable journey, the significance of hosting such a prestigious tournament in Manchester, and what fans can expect from this historic occasion.

why is hosting champions league futsal so special for manchester futsal and futsal in manchester more generally?

"The UEFA Futsal Champions League is the leading futsal competition. Naturally, clubs from futsal leagues across Europe all want to be compete at this level to test themselves. 56 clubs have entered this season so it’s a notable achievement for Manchester Futsal Club to line up against them.

The club have worked really hard over the last 15 years to put futsal on the map in Manchester so staging this event will elevate our position further, hopefully reaching new audiences that are interested to see the game played live in the city against international opposition.

Fundamentally futsal is a small-sided football game so in this football crazy city we know it will be appreciated and provides a contrasting spectacle to the eleven a-side format. Futsal is high intensity action, lots of skill and tactical strategies. There is no better sport to watch live in an arena."


describe the journey and evolution of the sport of futsal in manchester

"Futsal’s arrival in the city was around 2006 and started with the formation of Manchester Futsal Club. There was considerable ambition amongst the club founders to grow the club and reach the highest level, regardless of how difficult that journey was perceived.

The starting point was all about educating people about the sport, sharing our passion, justifying the value of futsal. The club joined the FA’s National Futsal League and didn’t look back. The mission then become about trying to bring more people with us and create a futsal community.

The club focussed on engaging young children, female players and working with local colleges and universities to develop teams and futsal provision in those early years.

Today, futsal can be enjoyed at many different levels. We have youth coaching and leagues, adult recreational leagues, women’s futsal on offer as well as local universities competing in competitions. Participation has been growing over a number of years and the club’s membership reflects a diverse cross section of players from different communities."

"Manchester as a city is a sporting magnet, all sports want to tap into its appeal and capability of hosting unique events and sporting moments. The breadth and scope of sporting events staged is unrivalled. UEFA were very excited that Manchester Futsal Club showed the desire to host its leading futsal competition in England and create history for the sport in England."


what does the future look like?

"Manchester Futsal Club wants to continue to be at the forefront of the development of the sport in the city. We want to sustain our success and attract more fans and players into the game. We are already delivering a player pathway from our youth teams to the senior teams. There is no limit to our potential, the sport is young and has a bright future in the city."

"New fans can follow us in the UEFA Futsal Champions league over our three Group D games but also when the domestic futsal season starts in September.
