DEBDALE OUTOOR ACTIVITY CLUB SHORTLISTED FOR RYA CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD

Debdale Outoor Activity Club has been shortlisted for the Royal Yachting Association Club of the Year award.

The nomination is a massive achievement for the club which was only formed in 2014. It is run by young people, for young people.

This unique youth led club underwent a re-brand at the start of 2020 to address the challenges of member retention. This overhaul gave the club a fresh, professional feel and a significant boost to numbers on social media. The club then used its online channels to engage, educate and inform members during the initial lockdown. The club has since more than doubled its membership, from 45-99, and following the easing of the initial lockdown has seen record numbers getting afloat. Membership is free. Vice Commodore, Joseph, winner of RYA Youth Volunteer Award 2020 has inspired other young members to become instructors. Going forward, the club plans to introduce a performance sailing pathway.

The RYA and Yachts & Yachting have once again joined forces to recognise the outstanding achievement of sailing clubs across the UK through the Club of the Year Awards – which recognise and promote the hard work which goes into making the UK’s sailing clubs successful.

Debdale has been shortlisted as ‘Modern and Innovative’ – this is recognition for a club who makes a break from traditional ways of running a club or delivering boating activity. This could be delivering different formats of training or racing to engage with new participants, new membership models or embracing the use of modern communications.
