MANCHESTER NAMED AMONG WORLD’S TOP 10 SPORTING CITIES FOR EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
Manchester has once again been recognised as one of the world’s leading sporting destinations, securing a place in the global top 10 sporting cities for the eighth consecutive year.
The latest international rankings place Manchester 10th in the world, making it the highest-ranked UK city outside London and reinforcing the city’s reputation as a global powerhouse for sport, major events and participation.
The recognition follows another landmark year for Manchester’s events programme, which has welcomed a series of world-class competitions to the city. Recent highlights include matches from the Women’s Rugby World Cup, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and the World Breaking Finals, showcasing Manchester’s ability to host major international events across a diverse range of sports.
The city’s sporting ambitions show no signs of slowing down. Over the coming years, Manchester is set to host an exciting pipeline of elite events, including an NBA regular season game, the National Track Championships and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift as part of its growing sports offer.
Manchester is also developing plans for an ambitious Urban Sport & Culture Festival, designed to celebrate the city’s vibrant street sport, music and creative culture, while further cementing its reputation as a destination for innovation in sport and entertainment.
Looking further ahead, the city will play a major role on the global sporting stage through hosting duties for the UEFA EURO 2028, bringing some of the biggest events in world sport to Manchester and attracting visitors, investment and international attention.
The continued recognition reflects Manchester’s long-standing commitment to sport at every level, from grassroots participation and community programmes through to hosting world-class events that deliver lasting social, economic and cultural benefits for residents and visitors alike.
Councillor Shazia Butt, Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Libraries, Manchester City Council, said:
“To be recognised as one of the top 10 best sporting cities in the world for an eighth consecutive year is a fantastic achievement and a testament to Manchester’s rich sporting heritage, world-class facilities, incredible events programme and passionate communities. Being the highest-ranked UK city outside of London once again reinforces our position as a global city with sport in our DNA.”
“What makes this recognition particularly special is that it reflects far more than elite competition. Sport in Manchester inspires healthier lifestyles, brings communities together, creates opportunities for young people and generates significant economic and social benefits for our city. From grassroots participation through to hosting major international events, sport continues to be a powerful force for positive change.”
“The future is incredibly exciting. With the NBA regular season game, National Track Championships, Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, World Climbing Series, MCR Drop, our ambitious Urban Sport & Culture Festival and UEFA EURO 2028 on the horizon, Manchester’s global sporting story will continue to grow. We remain committed to using the power of sport to inspire residents, attract investment and showcase Manchester on the world stage as a city that is, and always will be, alive with sport.”
